Research overview
Memory and cognition
Lingzhi has traditionally been used to calm the mind. In modern research, studies on lingzhi and memory are so far mainly animal experiments. One rat study found that in a simulated high-altitude, low-oxygen environment, rats given a lingzhi water extract had less memory impairment, and memory-related protein levels in the brain were restored.
Research on memory decline in older people, Alzheimer’s disease and related areas is being compiled and will be added over time.

Terms explained on this page (3)
- extract
- A product made by drawing out and concentrating lingzhi’s components with water or alcohol. Different extraction methods yield different components.
- hippocampus
- A region deep in the brain, shaped like a seahorse, that is closely linked to learning and memory.
- brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)
- A protein in the brain (abbreviated BDNF) that helps nerve cells grow and survive; it is closely linked to learning and memory.
